Connected glasses for the blind

Nélo, a vocal and visual assistant for the blind and visually impaired

Nelo, the promise of real autonomy for people with visual disabilities

Through computer-assisted vision, Nelo supports blind and visually impaired people in their daily lives. More than two years of research and development made it possible to design Nélo, a voice and visual assistant for the blind and visually impaired. This solution which, unlike others connected objects e-health, requires no internet connection and can be used anywhere. Just like the connected glasses, Nelo allows the visually impaired to rediscover their world. It is their vocal and visual assistant and offers them the autonomy they are looking for at all times.

Nelo is a practical, lightweight and easy-to-use tool. It revolutionizes the daily lives of individuals who are partially or totally sightless by telling them about the world. Thanks to this on-board visual recognition and audio information restitution system, it is now possible for these people to be independent in their social and professional lives. Among other things, practicing certain activities is no longer problematic. The world is becoming safer thanks to this vocal and visual assistant capable of analyzing complex environments and thus promoting decision-making.

Perception, 2 years of research for the project Nelo

The team of Perception has been involved in a visual assistant research and development project for 2 years. Perception, a company specializing in the design of communicating embedded systems dedicated to improving the daily lives of people with visual disability.

An innovative algorithm that analyzes the environment and renders it in the form of audio information for the blind and visually impaired

Equipped with a powerful computer (embedded system), a camera and headphones, Nelo describes the environment to blind and visually impaired people. The information is analyzed by an algorithm which then renders it in audio description with a discreet voice and good sound quality.
The person's environment is detected, analyzed and restored instantly. Nélo indicates obstacles to avoid collisions and analyzes faces with facial recognition… Also, Nélo films, records and interprets the images. It then instantly tells the environment to the visually impaired people so that they can properly assimilate the space in which they find themselves.
Associations worked closely on this project with theteam of Perception in order to offer a visual and audio device adapted and offering optimal safety to visually impaired people. Not requiring internet access (unlike connected glasses). Nelo was designed with the sole aim of offering greater autonomy to people suffering from visual disability.
