AN ASSISTANCE SYSTEM FOR BLIND PEOPLE AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE

NELO IS A FULLY AUTONOMOUS OBSTACLE DETECTION AND OBJECT AND PEOPLE RECOGNITION DEVICE, OPERATING WITHOUT INTERNET CONNECTION, IN ALL ENVIRONMENTS.

The intelligent personal assistant for blind and visually impaired people designed by the company Perception allows its users to benefit from a transcription in the form of sound signals for the detection of obstacles and descriptions, through a synthetic voice, for a good understanding of the environment.

The NELO on-board device is light, autonomous and works in “all contexts” (indoors, outdoors, in an urban environment as well as in the mountains or at sea).

In addition, the implementation of NELO and its dedicated artificial intelligence (A.I.) algorithms within a mobile phone previously selected for its performance allows its users to have, in accordance with their wishes, only one device combining the advanced functionalities of our device as well as those of a smartphone.

And, unlike many connected e-health objects, our device does not require any internet connection since it is completely autonomous (100% on-board technology). It is therefore not exposed to the risks linked to a network connection which can be slow or unstable, or even non-existent, which allows it to be effective in all types of environments, even “digital deserts”.

NELO EVOLVES

After a year of testing, the NELO concept continues to evolve by taking into account the comments of our testers and users in order to best adapt our device to the specific needs of the blind and visually impaired. The Perception company would also like to thank the Internet users who contributed to training the artificial intelligence of our device which today allows us to present an even more efficient and intuitive version of our on-board solution.

NELO, A VIGILANT AND BENEVOLENT EYE THAT CAPTURES AND INTERPRETS IMAGES OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN ORDER TO RESTITUTE IT IN REAL TIME IN AUDIO FORM

Visual impairment and blindness lead to a partial loss of autonomy which has significant consequences on all facets of daily life: work, health, cultural, social and sporting activities. This is because all activities are impacted by visual impairment: movement, perception of space, recognition of objects and people, learning at all levels (school, university, professional), making purchases in stores, etc.

This loss of autonomy can be accompanied, in addition to the particular health risks that it can cause (e.g. increased risk of falls, difficulty in following certain treatments), by a change in social behavior which can go as far as total isolation.

By designing NELO, the intelligent visual assistant for blind or visually impaired people, the company Perception imagined and designed an assistance device capable of perceiving the environment of its users (through the acquisition of images) in order to interpret it with relevance (detection of obstacles, recognition of objects and people). This is to deliver in audio form, in real time, the visual information processed by our dedicated and specifically trained artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

The fully autonomous assisted vision device, NELO, is made up of high-performance, reliable and lightweight equipment since its objective is to increase the autonomy of our users regardless of the location and conditions in which they will use it.

Nélo, a familiar voice which signals and describes the environment and faces

Computer vision technology developed by Perception allows its NELO device to convert data collected by its 3D camera system into real-time audio feedback. Obstacles, objects and faces are therefore indicated and can be described in more detail, on request, through headphones.

NELO's instant voice assistance restores the information collected in real time in order to provide its users:

A DEDICATED MOBILE APPLICATION

Nélo works through the use of a mobile application. Running Android 10.0, the application allows you to create a link between the camera and the headphones.
The advantage of our application lies in the fact that it does not consume mobile data. Thus the Nélo application can be used anywhere without consuming data. This new version reduces the size of Nélo and lightens its load. In addition, no other device is necessary to benefit from the services of our visual and voice assistant. In summary, Nélo is:

A camera capable of detecting and rendering the environment in 3D.

Identification of more than 50 types of objects.

UNDER DEVELOPMENT

NELO is an innovative solution in the field of e-health and the Perception team wants its device to maintain its technological edge. This is to provide its users with a better experience which will materialize in new functionalities which will allow them an even greater gain in autonomy. In this sense, our engineers are currently working on the next update of its artificial intelligence and are developing the following additional services:

Automatic recognition of the faces of its users' family and friends.
An introduction and physical description of the newly met people.
Give, in real time, the first name of a pre-recorded interlocutor.

Facial recognition

Thanks to its high-performance artificial intelligence, Nélo is capable of recording any face, identifying it in real time and recognizing it automatically and spontaneously. Facial recognition is carried out in all places: streets, stores, green spaces, workplaces, homes, etc.

Travel assistance

Nélo accompanies the visually impaired and the blind in their daily travels. The high definition camera films the images.
